The User Experience Design program is an opportunity to learn from top practitioners in the field, with a specific focus on helping you learn about UX design career.
Core skills that make up the entire user experience design process are covered as part of completing a group project. From research and ideation to prototyping and testing, you’ll learn how to solve design problems utilizing a tried and true set of skills and methods.
Who Should Attend:
While fields like web design, software development, psychology, and others, will have high level of relevance, most professional careers will offer transferable skills into user experience. The perfect candidates are those who are continuously carious and have a strong sense of empathy. If you often find ways products or services can be improved, than designing user experiences maybe right path for you.
Organization:
The program is designed to seamlessly blend lesson time with hands-on workshop time. Each day will include introduction of topics and class discussions, exercises to quickly apply new learning, and in-class work time towards the main group project. Topics are introduced as part of a process, simulating real-world workflow.
Course Objectives:
To introduce students to the user experience industry, it’s best practices and tools.
- To develop understanding of how users interact with your product through user research.
- To define the way your product interacts with users and how the interface behaves.
- To create interactive prototypes for testing and evolve your product.
- To collaborate with fellow designers and real users to solve design problems and create real products.
- To provide students with opportunities to develop design concept and begin a portfolio of work.
Topic Objectives:
Day 1
Intro to User Experience
Students will be able to articulate what we mean by user experience, define the skills and roles of a user experience team, have a general understanding of the process of UX design, and communicate its benefits to users and businesses.
Conducting User Research
Engage users and observe the way they interact with products or services. Conduct interviews and surveys to gather data to help understand the needs of the users.
Workshop: field research
Day 2
Participatory Design
Understand the importance of designing as a group. Utilize techniques that improve collaboration and increase ideation.
Sketching User Flows
Communicate concept via sketching. Demonstrate flow of activities towards accomplishing tasks. Design sequence of events that capture the objectives of product or service.
Workshop: project definition and initial sketching
Day 3
Sketching Interfaces
Be able to articulate the building blocks of an interface and what makes them more effective. Design simple interactions that are user-friendly.
Wireframing Basics
Understand layout, prioritization and how wireframes are used. Communicate the design of products using wireframe.
Workshop: sketching and layouts
Day 4
Prototyping for Beginners
Define various prototyping techniques. Select appropriate prototyping tools for the specific product and the stage of development.
Usability Testing
Articulate the value of testing. Understand and analyze collected data. Create actionable plan to address the findings.
Workshop: build and test prototype
Day 5
Presenting Your Designs
Understand the importance of presentation and how to tell the story of your design. Recognize audience types and how to effectively move the project forward.
Student Presentations
Prerequisites:
Some knowledge of the design industry.
Familiarity with design thinking concepts is helpful.
Any level of code familiarity will be helpful while not required.
Evaluation:
Peer review – In-class critiques and group discussions, offering direct feedback from other students along the way.
Instructor review – Direct feedback during workshop time and after completion of the group project.
